Conversation Starters (2022-23)

Agents for a more-than-human world

Explored AI misunderstandings through Conversation Starters, using the metaphor of growing to highlight failures as a way to reveal AI's limitations and foster trust

At TU Delft,  with a team of researchers, we explored alternative ways of interacting with conversational agents, questioning how people and agents co-shape everyday (mis)understandings of intelligence. Our focus: moving beyond human-centered design to imagine AI that fosters sharing, experimenting, caring, and repairing.

We used a variety of design research methods such as thing ethnography, AI metaphors, and agent conversations. Inspired by the metaphor of growing things, the project looked at how AI could be more responsible and situated in the ecosystems it exists within.

OUTCOME
  • Conducted research on alternative ways to engage with AI through conversational agents.
  • Created interactive experiences showcased at Dutch Design Week ’22-inviting visitors to engage with AI differently.
  • Published at CHI ’23, offering new perspectives on designing AI that embraces its relationships with humans, other species, and ecosystems.
